Course Description

Introduction This is a stimulating and demanding subject that combines practical, technical and academic skills. Students are able to develop a personal approach to the process of researching, developing ideas and making photographic images. Specification The syllabus revolves around the following disciplines: Practical photography: Digital The course will give students the opportunity to explore practical photography by developing photographic skills and techniques using a digital SLR camera. Apple Mac and PCs with Adobe Photoshop will be used for digital work. There is also the opportunity to learn DSLR video techniques. History and theory of photography Students carry out research studies that explore genre, style and tradition in photography and explore elements of visual language and meaning. Course Units AS Level units: ART F1 – Unit 1 (50% of AS Level, 25% of complete A Level) - Introduction to digital photography - Creative Lighting Techniques ART F2 – Unit 2 (50% of AS Level, 25% of complete A Level) Externally set exam theme, by the Awarding Body AQA. Delivered over a twelve week period. Students conduct initial research and experimentation to develop ideas prior to creating and editing a set of final images complete with analysis and evaluations. The exam also includes a five hour controlled test in which students put their journal together for submission.   A2 Level units: In the second year, students develop a more critical approach to the subject areas, choosing a personal theme to research, experiment in, analyse, evaluate and produce a final body of work. ART F3 - Unit 3 (50% of A2 Level 25% of complete A Level) This coursework project enables students to produce work in their own style via a personal investigation. The first eight weeks of the second year centres on Skills Development workshops. Students are given the opportunity to enhance their skills in: - Studio and or Location lighting techniques - B/W Darkroom Practice - Digital Manipulation - DSLR video capture and editing - Essay Critique and Writing The remainder of the Unit is led by the students own independent study, utilizing tutors for advice and guidance throughout the assignment. Lessons follow a mix of workshop and drop in sessions as well as regular one to one consultations. By prior arrangement, students may use Photography lessons to conduct location test shoots and visit gallery exhibitions relevant to their chosen topic. Tutors set and refine individual goals and targets to ensure that each student stays on track and produces the best possible final outcome. ART F4 – Unit 4 (50% of A2 Level 25% of complete A Level) A2 Photography exam externally set and moderated by AQA. Students research and develop their chosen exam theme over a ten week period, carrying out experimental test shoots and producing on-going critique and evaluation of their own and ‘others’ work – to produce a series of final images. Concludes with a 15 hour controlled test delivered over 3 days.
