Course Description

Introduction Philosophy is a deeply rewarding subject to study at A Level. Unlike other subjects philosophy is not something that you can learn; it is something that you have to actively do. The skills of analysis and reasoning that you develop are excellent tools to take to university or indeed into the world of work. Course Units The full A Level is comprised of four units, two AS and two A2, with exams in January and June. Within unit one you will study Reason and experience with the additional themes of Why should I be governed? and Why should I be moral? In unit two you will study the themes of Tolerance and Free will and determinism If you should continue with your studies into year two to complete the full A Level you will study in unit three the themes of Political philosophy and Moral philosophy together with a close critical study of the set text On Liberty by J S Mill, which will form unit 4 and complete your study. Subject combinations and pathways to progression Obviously any learner wishing to progress to study of philosophy at university will benefit greatly from this subject as will those who wish to progress to study of Law or Politics. Ideal subject combinations that will provide you with well rounded study experience and which will encourage you to achieve your best are shown below with some illustrations as to future progression from each combination.
