Course Description

AS level (year 1) Comprises of 3 modules including: Module MFP1 ? Further Pure 1 This module is approximately 50% of the further pure mathematics in year 1 and includes algebra and graphs, complex numbers, roots and coefficients of quadratic equations, series, calculus, numerical methods, trigonometry and matrices and transformations. Module MFP2 ? Further Pure 2 This module is approximately 50% of the further pure mathematics in year 1 and includes roots of polynomials, complex numbers, DeMoivre?s theorem, proof by induction, finite series, hyperbolic functions and areas of revolution. Combined with either: Module MS1B ? Statistics 1 This is an introductory module consisting of numerical measures, probability, binomial distribution, normal distribution, estimation and correlation and regression. A graphics calculator may be used in this module. or: Module MM1B ? Mechanics 1 This is an introductory module consisting of mathematical modelling, kinematics, statics and forces, momentum, Newton?s laws of motion, connected particles and projectiles. A2 level (year 2) Comprises of 3 modules including: Module MFP3 ? Further Pure 3 This module is approximately 50% of the further pure mathematics in year 2 and includes series and limits, polar co-ordinates and differential equations. Module MFP4 ? Further Pure 4 This module is approximately 50% of the further pure mathematics in year 2 and includes vectors and 3D geometry, matrix algebra, 3D transformations, solution of linear equations, determinants and linear independence. Combined with either: Module MS2B ? Statistics 2 Assumes knowledge of statistics 1 and includes discrete random variables, Poisson distribution, continuous random variables, estimation, hypothesis testing and Chi-squared contingency tests. or: Module MM2B ? Mechanics 2 Assumes knowledge of mechanics 1 and includes mathematical modelling, moments and centres of mass, kinematics, Newton?s laws of motion, application of differential equations, uniform and vertical circular motion, work and energy. Students will follow a programme of formal class teaching, supported by appropriate texts and computer software.
