Course Description

Theatre is the mirror of society. The great theatre practitioner Artaud referred to “the theatre and its double” – the double being the real world we live in. If this is true then Drama & Theatre Studies is a subject that offers you a chance to experience every facet of human behaviour and to find out who you really are. There is a Native American adage that says to understand human beings you must “walk about in another man’s moccasins”. Drama gives us this opportunity. Going to see live theatre and discussing it in detail is an essential part of the course. You can perform or direct as part of two practical examinations. For those who are not performers there is the option to be assessed through the skills of theatre lighting, sound, costume or set design. You will be studying a variety of plays over the two years and will be tested on your practical understanding of them in a written exam. A dynamic experience, not for the faint hearted! Please note that all applicants are required to audition. This subject is offered as part of the Drama Package (delivered with English Literature A Level as an integrated programme of study) or can be taken as an individual subject.
