Course Description

CRITICAL THINKING Why should I come to Pendleton College? Critical thinking will train you to strengthen your skills. You will study the different parts of an argument and learn to spot the flaws and assumptions that people make when they try to persuade others. You will learn how to develop good arguments on your own. Critical thinking is an AS Level course that can be studied in year one or two, in addition to your main A-Level programme. Critical skills can be applied in nearly all subject areas: humanities, languages, sciences and arts. It links particularly well to those subjects that involve debate and discussion. For these reasons, Critical Thinking is viewed by many of the top universities as a valuable additional course to study at college. What will I study? This one year course consists of two modules: Introduction to Critical Thinking (Assessing Credibility) Assessing and Developing Arguments What will I achieve? This AS Level will develop many skills, all of which carry significant value in the worlds of employment and higher education. These include thinking, decision-making, analytical research, debating, communication, interpretation and evaluation of information and arguments. How is the course assessed? Formal assessment is over two modules and is exam-based. During the course you will use a variety of materials including text from books, magazines, newspapers, TV and radio programs, court transcripts, political speeches and debates. What else will I do? You will have the opportunity to join student clubs and groups to develop your skills further. Visiting speaks will be invited to enhance the course.
