The main features of this course include: * The Tutor as Coach and Mentor * The skills of Coaching and Mentoring * The Coaching Cycle for Tutors * How to move from Targets to Motivational Goals * How to work with the willing and get more * How to work with the unwilling successfully * How to develop Peer Coaching * A comprehensive package of materials for Tutors in Coaching and Mentoring Synopsis Where support and guidance are effective they make a significant contribution to the pupils' achievement and personal development (Ofsted, February 2002) The expectations of the Form Tutor have developed beyond the pastoral and administrative role that has been it's foundation for so long. The Tutor is now expected to understand and influence the academic as well as the life success of the student. The Tutor may well be expected to be able to coach success, where new skills and understanding are needed. The Tutor has a unique overview of the educational experience of the student and a very special relationship in their learning. Describing the scene at parents' evening to her parents, a student said This is Miss Tetley and she's for French . Mr Davies is for Science and this is my Tutor Mr Warren and he's for me. Working as a coach, the Tutor will help the student set real goals that will raise achievement for the individual student through the school. The Tutor will help the student explore choices in their learning that they may not have believed existed. Choices that will develop motivation and sustain achievement. The workshop will explore ways in which the Tutor can work successfully in getting more from the willing and open opportunities for the unwilling. This course will focus on the skills of the Tutor as an Academic Coach and how they are pivotal in raising levels of achievement throughout the school. Course members will receive a handbook containing: * An outline of the skills required in Academic Coaching * A detailed description of the coaching cycle * Activities that develop from the workshop throughout the coaching cycle * How to understand others - How to develop trust - How to encourage people to own problems and avoid blame - How to set goals that motivate - How to find values in goals - How to develop the capability in others - How to review to bring about lasting change * A programme to develop Peer Coaching
