Overview

If you are considering how and where you might best lay a foundation for a lifetime of fruitful gospel ministry, then this is an extremely significant moment in your life. I don't wish to be alarmist, but the wrong move at this point could hinder your usefulness to God's kingdom for many years to come.My first advice would be this: ‘Don't try to shortcut the process.' You wouldn't be too impressed with the builder who suggested that shallow foundations meant he could get your house up more rapidly and cheaply. Those who would teach others should themselves commit to lifelong learning. And for that there is no quick fix. You need to begin deliberately and purposefully to cover the broad front of comprehensive biblical and theological education, practical ministry training and personal spiritual formation. This simply cannot be satisfactorily provided by the bewildering array of small, under-resourced, part-time courses that are currently on offer.WEST 102 Staff 27 Jonathan Stephen Principal 14Jonathan Stephen, PrincipalSecondly, assuming you agree that a firm foundation must be laid, how should you decide between the serious options available? You could go overseas! There are some superb, theologically sound seminaries in the United States and elsewhere. I understand that choice, but much of what is taught, even in the best of such institutions, simply cannot be sufficiently related to the needs of the very different cultural setting of the UK and Western Europe at large.Returning home, we discover a related problem at a deeper level. Here in the UK, we are living in a post-Christian world. Christendom has disappeared. It is no longer enough that the aim of theological colleges should be to fill existing pulpits with sound preachers. The old ‘attractional' model largely no longer works. In a sense, we have returned to ‘normal', the ‘missional' context of the New Testament, where pastor/teachers need to know how to mobilise their people for gospel outreach.Let me put it bluntly. I sadly believe that there are very few viable options in this country for those who wish to be educated and trained for Word-centred, gospel ministry in a truly reformed, evangelical environment which fully takes account of the radically changed, socio-cultural setting we are called to serve. That is, however, our passion at WEST. And though there are many other reasons for coming here, some listed below, for me this is the most important.Come and see for yourself! I greatly look forward to meeting you.
