The University of Southampton is already one of the top 15 research universities in the UK and has achieved consistently high scores for its teaching and learning activities.Southampton's record for success in spinning out its research excellence into business ventures has made it one of the leading entrepreneurial universities in the UK. In fact our success in commercialising academic research has been favourably compared with top US university Stanford in a recent Library House study. Our research has spawned twelve successful spin-out companies since 2000, three of which have been floated on London's Alternative Investment Market (AIM) with a combined market capitalisation value of £160 million. Find out more about our spin-out companies. We have seven highly respected professional consultancy units, which are much in demand by both commercial and public sector organisations. Combined they employ 125 staff and generate £7.5m revenue per annum. Find out more about our consultancy units. We have been one of the most successful universities in the country in winning grants from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Technology Programme, now run by the Technology Strategy Board. A total of almost £20 million has been awarded over the last two years, including £6 million in collaboration with our spin out companies. The DTI technology programme invests directly in new and emerging technologies and has been designed to encourage businesses to work collaboratively with each other or with academic partners. Innovative technologies supported through grants to Southampton academics include stem cell research, lasers, nanotechnology, alternate fuel development and the reduction of aircraft noise.Southampton also boasts a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) portfolio worth over £1.7 million. The University has an extremely high success rate in gaining KTP funding: on average, 60 per cent of KTP proposals are funded on first application but Southampton continues to enjoy a success rate which is substantially higher.
