Overview

The University of Cambridge has attracted many of the very best minds since 1209, when a group of scholars left Oxford to set up a new institution in Cambridge.

Today the University has grown to around 20,000 students, 7,500 of whom are graduate students. Of those graduate students, 50% come from overseas, and over 40% are women. The University and its Colleges are now spread throughout the city.

At Cambridge, graduate courses are tough: we offer a lot and we expect a lot. But if you have the commitment, the ability and the motivation, you can expect great rewards - exhilarating intellectual satisfaction and a capability much sought after by employers in industry, academia and other sectors.

With more than 18,000 students from all walks of life and all corners of the world, over 11,000 staff, 31 Colleges and 150 Departments, Faculties, Schools and other institutions, no two days are ever the same at the University of Cambridge.

The University is a confederation of Schools, Faculties, Departments and Colleges. The 31 Colleges are governed by their own statutes and regulations, but are integral to the make-up of the University.

As well as being a member of the University and of an academic Faculty/Department, our students also belong to a College community, an arrangement that offers pastoral and academic support for each individual.
