Overview

Our students with specific educational needs can tailor-make their timetable to focus on the academic essentials. When added tosmall classes and specialist teachers, it is no surprise Roedean is in the top 5% of schools nationally for value added at Key Stage 5 (sixth form), the only school in Brighton and Hove to achieve this*.At Roedean, our girls flourish on a coastal campus which offers more space, light and fresh air than any comparable site in Brighton. Naturally, being on top of a cliff, it is the iconic building which is likely to attract your attention first. The main school, now restored to its traditional honey colour, was designed by Victorian architect Sir John Simpson in close consultation with the Lawrence sisters. You can see their vision of an extended family unit where all ages mixed together in the layout of the four boarding houses. Other buildings, including a beautiful chapel and cloisters, were added over time. A common misperception about the school, perhaps stemming from its elevated position and gated driveway, is that it is somehow intimidating or exclusive. In fact, once inside, visitors quickly realise the building is a living home to 400 energetic, unshowy girls as friendly and welcoming as any in Brighton. The 120 acre site sits snugly on the edge of the South Downs National Park and the English Channel. Our girls can walk down to the undercliff to explore the rockpools, or learn to sail from the marina, but they can also count the rabbits from their window, or pick blackberries from the hedges.
