Overview

he King's School is to forge a partnership with Priory School in Tynemouth, with a view to establishing an all through Academy which will be funded by central government, and will therefore be free to parents. It is the intention of the governors of both schools to set up the Academy for September 2013. From that point onwards, school fees would no longer be payable at King's. This summer, the Department for Education approved an Expression of Interest (EOI) which had been put forward by the Woodard Academies Trust (as you know, King's is a Woodard School). The reason for this proposal is our absolute desire to open up the education that we offer to the Tynemouth community. We are keenly aware of the difficulty that many parents have in meeting the school fees, and indeed that many are prevented from choosing King's in the first place due to the cost.As an Academy, we would not select pupils (except perhaps 10% based on a particular specialism). In every other way we would retain the independence that we currently enjoy. We are convinced that the Academies programme will allow us to retain (and improve) high standards of teaching, and to maintain excellent pastoral care and a full extra-curricular programme.
